Short History of J. Barbour & Sons Ltd
The company that makes the Barbour brand today was established by John Barbour in South Shields, England in 1894. Initially the company's customers were the outdoor workers of the local community - sailors, fishermen, farmers and shepherds who needed to work outdoors in all weather. Without the synthetic material we take for granted today, waxed cotton clothing was the only way to stay dry outdoors.
The reputation of the company spread from the Tyne Valley and the Borders of Scotland and by the beginning of the 20th Century Barbour's Beacon brand oilskin were being worn throughout Britain. And as the Empire spread throughout the world, demand for Barbour clothing came from the colonies where the weather was often more rigorous than the North Sea gales and the oilskins were fully tested in places as diverse as Canada, Australia, Hong Kong and New Zealand.
Barbour began producing a catalog in 1908, and from a 16 page limited offering it grew steadily in size and importance to the company. The current catalogs are glossy full color affairs, running to 30-40 pages with products ranging from the very popular waxed jackets (Beaufort, Bedale, Border) to waders, socks and hats.
As the 20th century unfolded use of the company's products reflected the times. A water proof waxed cotton submarine suit was developed for use in the British Submarine Service. And throughout the middle of the century Barbour waxed cotton motorcycle suits were standard wear for international motorcycle teams in European competitions. The skills and knowledge acquired in making specialized waxed cotton clothing for "extreme" uses have been put to good use over the years in the making of a wide range of outdoor clothing.
Now, the company's reputation is based on stylish clothing suitable for country or town. Attention to detail is a hallmark of the clothing, and because of its robust and practical nature the life expectancy of the waxed jacket is limited only by the abuse and care it receives along the way. Given these qualities it is not surprising that these jackets are worn and admired in every kind of activity all round the world.
